BBC HardTalk Sarah Montague talks to Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Syed Hamid Albar

BBC News – HardTalk 13 September 2007 – Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar:

Malaysia has just marked fifty years of independence, and there’s much to celebrate.

Living standards have improved immeasurably over the past five decades, illiteracy has been virtually eradicated and the economy is doing well.

But do Indian and Chinese Malaysians have as much to celebrate as the Malay population?

Sarah Montague talks to Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar about whether the law giving preferential treatment to Malay and other indigenous groups is now outdated.

The Cicak – Race increasingly an issue in Malaysia, says BBC. What do you think, foreign minister? [with transcript]

The answers are contradictory and a lot of denial with bits of patriotism. I wonder why it’s “Malays” and not “Bumiputeras” and why Dato’ didn’t not tell Sarah the meanings of Malays & Bumiputeras?

The Malays in Malaysia are not the original settlers here. They came from Indonesia. Bumiputera is the Malays and Muslims in West Malaysia, natives in East Malaysia. Am I right? So the rightful original settlers / Bumiputera (stands for son of the soil) should be Orang Asli in East & West Malaysia! Malaysia is like Australia where prisoners and prison wardens from England claim Australia as theirs while neglecting the natives. Of course, it depends on the individual because not every Malay believes that they are the only ones who have “the right”.

Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar: When you talking about, looking at everyone, we’re looking at nation building. The most important thing is Malaysians feel they are Malaysians… we’re able to act as Malaysians

I’m a Malaysian but I am not able to act as a Malaysian 100%.

Can I get accepted into courses at public universities that I want with good results & strong extra-curriculum? I had Aggregate 07 in Pure Science Stream + active in clubs. I couldn’t get into any Public Uni after SPM. My Muslim classmate in college jumped in glee when she got accepted into Medical. She had P7 for her Biology. I appealed but to no avail.

Can I get lower interest quote for housing, car loans? Can I pass my subjects even with lower marks? Can I get scholarships from so many organizations?
